Excellence, A Message to Garcia

Monday September 10th, 2018

A Message to Garcia covered many topics including the publication, the back story and some tough but important vocabulary here are some examples. A Message To Garcia was published in March 1899 as an inspirational essay and was later turned into both a book and pamphlet. A Message to Garcia sold over 40 million copies in 37 different languages and was made into a movie twice with included 1916 and 1936. "Take a message to Garcia" was a popular slang expression for taking initiative. Some back story about A Message to Garcia was it took place during the Spanish-American war as well as Garcia being the revolutionary seeking Cuban independence from Spain. Rowan was one of the army officers as McKinley was the president who served (1897-1901) and then was assassinated six months into his second term by a anarchist. One interesting fact was that the tallest mountain in North America was named Mount McKinley in tribute of him but in 2015 they changed it back to Denali. Some important key vocabulary words were Perihelion, Slipshod, Imbecility, Stenographer and Missive.
Perihelion- Point when planet is closest to sun and is the brightest
Slipshod- Careless, Lackadaisical, Slapdash and Remiss
Imbecility- Incapability, Feebleness, Stupidity
Stenographer- A person who takes dictation in shorthand
Missive- A letter, especially a long or official one
In conclusion, I learned that it is important to have a strong work ethic and give 100% all of the time.
