Excellence Part 2

September 12th, 2018

Today in class we finished the slide show on excellence and these are some of the things that I learned. I learned that the word Arete` means the act of living up to one's full potential. Below are some other notes that I learned today in class.

  • Arete` involves all of the abilities and potentialities available to humans
  • The highest human potential is knowledge -all other human knowledge is knowledge about knowledge itself
  • Agora- gathering place, assembly, marketplace, the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life in the city/state (esp. Athens)
  • Polis- Political entitles ruled by their bodies of citizens origin of the words politics, metropolitan and poll
  • 508 BCE the birth of democracy- The first time in recorded history a people had revolted against their rulers
  • Socrates the early years- As a young man he worked as a stone mason, he fought heroically in the Peloponnesian war, was working class background and the battle field experiences shaped the way he viewed life
  • Socrates the teacher- Socrates met with young students in workshops just outside the agora, his method was to ask a series of questions to determine the underlying beliefs and the extent of their knowledge. That lead to the scientific method, in which you start with a hypothesis, then set out to prove or disprove your theory through experimentation.
